    I took a dislike to propane stoves after seeing so many tanks discarded by the trailside. I also don't like the idea that much of what you are buying is compression--you can use a Steva or single-burner Coleman and pump it up yourself. As for the hobo stove, hoboes call that a twig stove; it is made for smaller pieces. When you cut out the door, fold the panel down to form a feed tray. And for God's sake, put a lid on your pots.

    Why screw around with pressurized gas when you can get a smaller more powerful, lighter weight stove that that has been around since 1960, the Seva 123 with a build in fuel tank. It uses white gas or the slightly larger and Optimus 00 that the whisperlite is based on, but far better than the whisperlite. What a scam to see so many people get sucked into the propane stoves. We as a culture need to get over the idea that the newest, great idea is not always the best idea as well as the throw away mentality. I'm still going out and about using the same stoves I bought new in 1969. The only upkeep has been to replace the rubber gasket on the fuel tank in 2024. For 25 years I was wilderness out fitter and these are two of the stoves we used in the business and have seen heavy service.

    I did that on a bike trip before, the bad thing is you need to keep applying wood into the fire and it cooks slow, now I carry a home-made alcohol stove on the trip as back up, I hate using gas canisters.

    This hobo stove looks a bit oxygen starved. It'd be beter to raise the fire and add draft holes around the bottom.

      You are right. There should be a gap between the stove and the pot for the flames to go up round the pot.

    I bought a 16 inches folding bike. Then yesterday I bought 20 inches hito. Both different folding bike are same shimano 7 speed bicycle. BUT for my 16 inches, I can ride so easily and hit 33km per hour speed. But on this hito, the top speed is 27km per hour and my both knee cap are so sore after a few mins ride. Both are same 7 speed, but maybe the crank set and cog on a 20 inches bicycle make it very difficult to ride once above gear 3. For my 16 inches folding bike even at gear 7, it still feel very affordless.

    Real ortliebs can last a lifetime. You could modify your bike. There are handlebars on which you can adapt the angle so you can sit more forward or more upright. I have it on my Koga. For long trip I start with the handlebar low forward. But when I get tired I bring the handlebar up and closer to me so I sit up right.

    • @bartvschuylenburg
      @bartvschuylenburg 11 днів тому

      @@WindsongPodcast yes they will stay waterproof as long as you don’t put sharp things in it of course. I’ve spoken to people who were cycling with 40 year old Ortlieb bags with no problems. I think the suspension of those bags would fail before the bag itself, but that takes incredibly long to happen as well. Ortlieb is the holy grail of cycling bags when it comes to sturdiness and durability.

    I've used those toe clips. Mainly to keep my foot in the optimum contact position of the pedal. It does help. Usually I start with one foot in, then ride for a few seconds with my other foot using the flat side of the pedal. Then I've got time to put my remaining foot in the other pedal once I'm coasting.

    I think you are spot on using the backpack over panniers. I've seen several youtubers ditch panniers because of the weight such as Tristian's video; "Packing for Bikepacking: everything I carry after 7 years around the world". His reasoning is compelling.

    The thing with panniers, is that one can just buy a pair and be done with. 50 litter. It's a good size for most people, waterproof is known to be reliable and they are convenient to attach and detach. That said. I love the set up you explain in other videos and did stuff like that when I was a kid and didn't have any other transportation means.

    I have used spd pedals, straps and clips. To be honest i am much happier with basic flat pedals. Had most of my crashes whilst clipped in. I have a 20 year-old mtb for bikepacking, works well and has lasted many miles. I am tempted to try a folder though.

    Interesting to see your weather change at the same time ours does in the north. I rode with toe clips for years. They're useless without the strap so just delete them. Clip pedals replaced them. They allow you to pull up for 25% more power.

    • @jayziac

    Toe clips and securing the foot to the pedal , is about efficiency. A roadie thing. But, I agree. The hassle factor ain't worth it. The size of a folder and the ability to fit it in small spaces is a great feature, but I think the standard bike is easier to ride, in general.
